How do you plan a Mal País coastal walk?
Make the outing about observing the rocky shoreline and any visible tide pools, with the route chosen around current tides and local access advice. A photograph of a calm pool does not establish swimming conditions for your visit. Watch marine life without handling it, leave shells and rocks in place, and arrange the return pickup in advance.
Trade a schedule for a stretch of coast
For a day that asks less of your calendar, consider a coastal outing in Mal País. Costa Rica's tourism board describes its rock formations and natural pools visible at low tide. That offers a different focus from a morning organized around catching waves.
Go with the intention of observing the shore, not finding a guaranteed swimming spot. The appeal can be as small as a pattern in the rocks or a glimpse of movement beneath the water. You do not need to cover the whole coastline to have a satisfying walk.
Let the tide shape the plan
Ask a knowledgeable local guide about a suitable access point and the current tide and sea conditions. A low tide is not a guarantee that an exposed pool or rocky route is safe. Breaking waves, slippery surfaces and changing water levels can make a place unsuitable even when it looks inviting in photographs.
Keep to a straightforward permitted route and leave water entry out of the plan if there is any uncertainty. For children or anyone unsteady on uneven ground, choose a place where the view can be enjoyed without crossing rocks.

Leave shells, rocks and marine life where they are, and do not move animals into better positions for a photograph.
